INSTRUMENT RATING TRAINING

Why get an instrument rating?
An instrument rating, added on to your existing pilot certificate, allows you more freedom to travel when the weather isn't suitable for visual flight. Instrument flight plans are often a more direct way to go from point to point than flying cross-country VFR. Additionally, learning to use the flight instruments effectively is a major factor in the safety of all flights, day and night, good weather and poor, and the skills you learn from the Instrument rating course will help you be a better and safer pilot.
What are the requirements for an Instrument rating?
To enroll in the course, you must already have received your Private Pilot certificate, at minimum. The FAA requires pilots to have at least 50 hours of cross-country PIC (pilot in command) time as well as at least 40 hours of simulated or actual instrument time. Similarly to the Private Pilot certificate, a written exam, an oral exam, and a flight test are all required as well. The cost of obtaining your Instrument rating depends on many factors.
What does Instrument training consist of?
The flight training is comprised of learning how to precisely control the airplane by instrument reference and radio navigation, and you will be introduced and trained to perform accurate instrument approach procedures. You will also learn to perform holding patterns and IFR cross-country procedures, and will increase your proficiency to the level of instrument pilot.
On the ground, with help of a Certified Flight Instructor-Instrument, you will learn the principles of instrument flight, including operation and use of flight isntruments and navigation equipment, as well as learn the function of ATC, IFR cross country operations, and instrument chart procedures as a means for IFR flight.
What about college credit?
In completing your Instrument rating at Lumanair, you can receive credit at Waubonsee Community College that can applied toward an Associate's degree in Applied Science. Most students who receive their Associate's transfer to other schools to complete their Bachelor's degree in aviation or other related fields.
