________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Why learn to fly?

The Private Pilot certificate will allow to you to fly an airplane for business, recreation, or to build time for a career in aviation. It also allows you to fly in fair weather conditions maintaining visual references outside the cockpit, as well as carry passengers, as long as it is not for hire.

Imagine flying your family to your favorite vacation destination or cruising around with your friends in the air on a sunny day, or how productive your business could become flying to meetings instead of driving. For those looking for a career, becoming a professional pilot is considered a dream job by many, and the first step to achieving that is by earning your Private Pilot certificate.

What are the requirements for obtaining a Private Pilot certificate?

In order to be able to obtain the Private Pilot certificate, you must first meet certain age and language requirements set by the FAA. You must be at least 17 years old to complete the training, however, you can begin training  and log flight time at any age. You also must be 15 years old to take the written exam and 16 years to fly solo in an airplane. Additionally, you must be able to read, speak, and understand English.

As far as experience and examinations go, you must log at least 40 hours of minimum flight time, including 20 hours of dual instruction in an aircraft with a Certified Flight Instructor and 10 hours of solo flight time, as well as take a written examination, and the end of course oral and flight examinations. You will also need to receive and pass at least a 3rd class medical exam from an FAA Aviation Medical Examiner.

The cost of obtaining a Private Pilot certificate varies based on location, duration of training, type of aircraft, time, and many other factors.

How long does it take?

Lumanair is a Part 61 flight training center, there are no up front costs, contracts, or deadlines, you learn at your own pace.

What aspects of flight are covered in Private Pilot training?

In the air, the main areas of operation include takeoffs, landings, maneuvers, stall prevention, ground reference maneuvers, emergency procedures, night operations, and cross-country procedures. Ground topics include airspace, regulations, weight & balance, aerodynamics, aeromedical factors, and more.

What about college credit?

Nearby Waubonsee Community College offers a Private Pilot ground school twice yearly for credit, in the fall and spring semesters. Also, in completing your Private Pilot certificate at Lumanair, you receive additional credit at Waubonsee that can applied toward an Associates degree in Applied Science.
